Patient and Steadfast and Steady
Mirabel left her home a decade ago and is now returning.
She's... terrified.
She doesn't know what to expect, what to think, what to say.
But she's not alone, and things in the Encanto aren't quite as she'd left them.
It might just be time for her to get a miracle of her own.
(Written for the best girls birthday, tho I didn’t get it out in time. A runaway and returning Mirabel fic!)

mirabels birthday so here’s some headcanons !!!🦋💘
- she zones out a LOT! whatever she’s working on/ thinking about takes priority in her mind so she accidentally gets so invested she could forget someone’s talking to her! (this doesn’t help in school)
- She’s a try hard on everything! probably stems from her giftless status but she gets frustrated if she can’t be up to standards! she ends up exhausting herself or burning out because she overworks herself!
- social butterfly! she’s a people person and loves talking to both the adults and the kids! she loves validation from the adults and being a role model to the kids!
- never stops talking😭 mirabels a professional yapper🙏 DONT ever ask her to explain what she’s working on because she will not shut up ever!!!
- carries around a sketchbook with her and goes to different parts of the encanto for inspiration! she might just doodle a motif or theme but it’s always something! she uses it later in her projects
- stealing @spooky-spextre-arts hc here but I love this one sm!! after Antonio’s plushie he tells the other kids and she makes a load of plushies for everyone!!
- she painted the mural in family madrigal! I think alma is aware mirabels artsy and would have asked her to do it! since it’s special commission that’s why the husbands are absent! mirabel was just so excited to be asked! Also it fits her art style
- she makes clothes! She designs them AND makes them!!
- she has friends! she’s incredibly social and I refuse to believe there’s only 2 teens in the encanto
- she likes cooking with julieta! even if she’s not the best at it she just appreciates the time with her mother!
- she helps Luisa discover her own style! since Luisa’s outfit is for work mirabel makes her other outfits to wear on her days off
- when she gets a crush she’s super annoying about it! Love language is acts of service!
- makes fun of camilo for being cringe (she is also cringe)
- Antonio is her fave cousin (this ones basically canon)
- a home bird!! she can’t ever picture herself leaving the encanto and this causes some friction between her and isa because isa does leave at some point!
- vents to casita about anything and everything (they are best friends)
- still struggles with opening up to people post movie. she’s not user to all the attention on her and gets overwhelmed often (she would never admit it)
- more street smart than book smart and is average in school but prefers art
- hates her birthdays (this one’s sad ik) but not only is it the anniversary of her ceremony but the day bruno left and in her mind the beginning of the cracks! she’s getting better but it’s still hard! (Her family spoil her for this exact reason)
- when she’s not playing music in the town she often plays with Felix and Dolores!

Mermaid AU, except that the entire Madrigal family used to be humans that got turned into mermaids due to some kind of family curse
VERY COOL I LOVE IT...maybe a lil too much. Went crazy with the drawings and ideas BUT YEAHHHHHHH. Uh before I start ranting. I seriously recommend listening to Hole Dwelling by Kikuo (the english version or just look up the english lyrics) because that song reminds me a lot of this au. Like. A lot. I WANNA GO TO THE KIKUO CONCERT IN MY CITY SO BAAAADDDD
Anyway, most of, if not all the mer aus on this blog are sorta just viewed as a plus to the magic but this would be pretty much the first (that I can think of) where it's an actual curse.
Anywayyyy uh, the candle magic came from Pedro's side, so maybe the family curse came from Alma's side?? Maybe the magic and the curse sorta clashed in a way.
Anyway that leads into my other idea, maybe after the first ceremonies the clash got too much and. Boom catastrophic stuff, idk. Maybe a sinkhole formed beneath Casita and after a few months, it finally collapses into the hole. And a storm fills it with water. Whether it's caused by Pepa or not, I'm not sure, but maybe not? Because I sorta like the idea of there being a perpetual cloud above it, and anytime the smallest amount of water is taken out, whether manually or by natural causes, I think it immediately rains to fill it back up.
If it happens early on, I think it's considered a myth by a lot, except for those old enough to remember Alma and the triplets at the time, and it's told to children mostly to scare them into staying away from the sinkhole and getting them to stay safe around water.
They like to tell the kids that if you look into the sinkhole (which seems infinite and VERY dark), you can see one of them. But you can never see their faces for some reason. Idk
UHHHHH. I like the idea of them not being entirely normal merfolk. Like the girls are all jellyfish merfolk, and the guys manta rays. That ides came later tho, that's why lil Antonio sort looks like a baby jellyfish (or Ponyo in a way), and then in the last one I was debating between the two. Leaning towards manta ray.
Reason why they have clothes is because some people genuinely believe that the Madrigals are down there and feel bad, so they sorta just. Throw clothes down there. And other miscellaneous. Sometimes something else will pop back up, almost as a thank you.
Uhh Antonio is very curious about the surface, but he's not allowed up there. Doesn't necessarily stop him. He usually harasses Camilo or Mirabel to go up there with him, usually only for a few minutes. I also had an idea where part of there curse is they can’t leave the water, even breaking the surface. Or at least, they can’t stay above surface for long. They can get pretty close though. Might scrap it idk
Mostly Antonio tbh 😭
I like this idea way too much tbh

mirabel headcanons?
Absolutely! Here’s Mirabel headcanons:
Mirabel’s full name is Mirabel Teresa Rojas Madrigal
She is named after Saint Teresa of Ávila
Her birth was a disappointment as everyone had been expecting a boy
As a baby, Mirabel was very easy to please/soothe and didn’t enjoy being fussed over
Her first eleven words were all colours, starting with “purple” for Luisa
She had no interest in walking or crawling, until Agustín accidentally knocked a book off a shelf and she had to move to put it back. This started a long game of Agustín (and later Pepa) throwing books and Mirabel stopping what she was doing to walk over and put them back
Young Mirabel use to cry at mess
Subsequently, she had to eat separately from Camilo
Mirabel had her first eye test after Camilo’s ceremony, as she had been unable to see it
She has myopia in both eyes
The green frames are not for Bruno (who had no relationship with her), they are for Pepa because young Mirabel wanted to have green eyes like her Tía
Agustín taught her to play the piano very early on
Julieta taught her to sew
When stressed, she over cleans - a habit she picked up from her mother
The most popular theory of what her gift would be was sight, ironically. The family figured she was very observant and similar to Dolores, hence similar gifts
As she gets older, she gets mistaken for Julieta more frequently
Like her mother, she’s never had any desire to leave Encanto
Like her father, she burns very easily in the heat and therefore tends to carry around an embroidered parasol (that matches her skirt) during particularly hot days
She is known to be the most intelligent among the Madrigals
The biggest history nerd
Will find a way to make anything into a history lesson. Seriously ANYTHING. Definitely associates particular historical figures with her family members
Mirabel is the biggest bookworm in Encanto
She also has a fondness for philosophy
Her philosophy knowledge can be a bad mix with her overthinking, anxious mind. When she’s anxious or paranoid, her philosophy books are placed on the highest shelves in Casita
She is closest to Luisa
She didn’t start helping with Antonio until he reached the toddler stage/moved into the nursery with her, as she is uncomfortable around babies
She use to read to Antonio when they shared a room, so much that she unintentionally memorised the stories. She use to be able to recount them word for word while they were out and about town to calm him down
She can play the piano and accordion
She loves knitting. Never leaves home without some knitting needles and wool, just in case
She has no interest or skill in making clothes. She just likes the more decorative elements (embellishing), such as embroidery and beading
Probably gets a job as an embellisher in the future
She learnt French for the sole purpose of reading originally French books. She is fluent, as far as reading and writing goes. She is pretty terrible at speaking
She has very bad stage fright and hates public speaking. She also can’t act, like at all. If Tío Bruno or Camilo want her help with a show, she’ll only accept a backstage role
She is the shortest Madrigal and always will be. She uses it as a bragging right, as oppose to a weakness
She is aromantic asexual
She doesn’t want children. Maybe just a cat. Or three…. Or twenty.
Is a real old lady at heart
She has PTSD - that’s pretty self-explanatory
Is a bit of a workaholic, and therefore can be hypocritical to Luisa
Don’t argue with her. She will write an entire six page essay to prove you wrong with full evidence
Does have a habit of needing to be right, she gets it from Dolores
Mirabel does not want to be Alma’s successor

A brumira idea I've had is, what if Bruno actually left the Encanto after Mirabel's ceremony and then Mirabel left the Encanto after Antonio's?
I've seen both of those floating around, and I've even seen a Brumira story where Bruno left the Encanto and then Mirabel decides to leave when she's 17/18 and they meet up at a bar.
But. I'm thinking something that sort of combines the two.
When Bruno leaves, he takes very little with him. Some changes of clothes, some food he pilfers, and that last vision. He hikes over the mountain and settles in the first town he comes across, not wanting to be too far, but not willing to stay. As a Madrigal, he helped the community in a variety of different ways, so he is skilled enough to make a living. So he does. Eventually, he settles on wood working, carpentry. He gets to be artistic and he gets to make things that actually help people, unlike his visions.
Mirabel, 10 years later, pushed aside by her family over concerns of the magic and her lack of gift and other issues, leaves. No one besides Abuela Alma knows he had a vision, as he took it with him and met no one on the way out. So. The day after Isabella's engagement to Mariano, two days after Antonio's birthday, Mirabel packs a bag with a change of clothes, some food, and some of her sewing supplies. She'll need to support herself after all.
So she walks to the next town over and talks to the tailors and seamstresses about someone hiring her on as an assistant or apprentice. Mirabel shows them her work on her clothes, offers to demo her skills, and most turn her away except one. This one calls Bruno over, as Bruno is good at reading people, even after all this time of not using his gift.
Bruno puts down his tools, comes over and talks to her. About her home life, where she's from, why this town, etc. And he recognizes her as Mirabel, his niece. But she says her name is Veronica Mortize.
So. Two weeks after she arrived at the town and she became the apprentice for one of the seamstresses, Bruno finally finds time to talk to her in private.
So she spills that, yes, her name is not Veronica Mortize, it's Mirabel Madrigal. She talks of her family's gifts, how she didn't get one, how things just got worse and worse for her as everyone grew tired of her being in the way and in the middle of things and she grew tired of everyone leaving her behind. So she left to make a name for herself.
Then Bruno tells her his story. His name, his gift, how everyone treated him. They commiserate over food Mirabel makes that reminds them both of Julieta's cooking.
3 Years go by. The two are busy, providing for themselves and holding down jobs in a town far busier than Encanto, but they meet up every month or so and catch up. Then it moves to meeting every two weeks. Then once a week.
Mirabel tosses out the idea of them living together first.
"We are family after all. That wouldn't be weird, and we would both save a lot of money and be far less lonely."
And. Well. Who is Bruno to argue with saving money?
But he also notices that they sit close together on the couch. That they sit next to each other at the table. That everyone around them thinks they are in a romantic relationship and most don't even know the two live together.
Bruno then notices the odd touches they give each other, across the shoulders, down the back, on the arms and legs. Bruno notices that Mirabel will sometimes look at him longer than perhaps a niece should look at her uncle. And he catches himself on more than one occasion looking at her longer than an uncle should look at his niece.
So they talk about it. It is an awkward, stilted conversation of uncomfortable realizations and begrudging agreement to not go further. They don't look each other in the eye for weeks afterwards. They try to keep their distance from each other. Meal times are quiet and suffocating. People and neighbors and coworkers wonder if they're fighting.
No. Not really. Just trying to reestablish the normal boundaries that family members should have between each other.
They break down three months after The Conversation. They cling to each other, the only comfort they have in a (not so) foreign land, the only comfort they have away from home, away from family. They agree that distance was not helping and that a certain amount of damage has already been done. So long as they don't cross more boundaries, they should be fine.
They keep this up for over a year. Soon, Mirabel is 20. Bruno is 55.
And both are done with the boundaries they upheld for several years now.
They get married with a small ceremony at the local church, using Mirabel's fake name and Veronica Mortize becomes Veronica Madrigal.
3 years later, a rider comes from over the mountain in search for Bruno Madrigal and Mirabel Madrigal. Alma Madrigal is dying and has requested that someone send news to them so she can see them in her final days.
Bruno and Mirabel have a serious conversation about the family, how they would react, was it wise to return as a married couple or should they hide it?
"Mirabel, neither of us are good pretenders, and both of us are already outcasts in that village. What good would hiding do?"
They decide to brave the backlash, Mirabel talks to the lead seamstress about a leave of absence, and Bruno closes his shop. Neighbors and friends wave them goodbye as they head to a mountain that has split down the middle, back to a place neither thought they would ever see again.

Corpse Bride!AU
Eighteen-year-old Mirabel Madrigal is preparing for her wedding to Mariano Guzman - a marriage not so much of love as of convenience: the magic of the Madrigal family can fade at any moment, and a new generation of gifts is needed. While rehearsing her speech, (“with this candle I... will burn my abuela and our magical home”), she places a ring on a twisted branch and is transported to the afterlife, where she finds herself betrothed to a mysterious “dead groom.” She doesn’t know who he is and is desperately eager to enter the world of the living. At this time, a certain evil la bruja takes the form of Mirabel in order to enter the Madrigal family and take possession of their miracle. No one realizes about the substitution, with the exception of Antonio, who immediately understands that this is not Cousin Mirabel. The same thing is told to him by the animals who saw that Mirabel - the real Mirabel - was suddenly carried away to the kingdom of the dead.
In the Kingdom of the Dead, meanwhile, Mirabel learns the story of the “dead groom” - and realizes that this is her tío Bruno, who disappeared 13 years ago. That same witch already wanted to get the family miracle, she convinced Bruno to get married secretly and poisoned him immediately after the wedding - but Casita did not open the door for her and the witch had to retreat for a while. Mirabel and Bruno recognize each other. She sees what kind of person he was: romantic, with an open soul and a kind heart, and she is filled with empathy and compassion. She realizes that she is starting to fall in love with him. Bruno, noticing this, gives her the ring and helps her return to the world of the living - and they end up just at the engagement of the false Mirabel and Mariano. Bruno interrupts the ceremony by telling the truth - his sisters and Abuela are shocked. The false Mirabel sheds her disguise and tries to attack Abuela to take away the candle, but Bruno rushes to intercept her and defends his mother. The witch, laughing, declares that she will not retreat anyway, because the dead cannot harm the living - and then the rats, under the leadership of Antonio, add rat poison to the wine. The witch drinks it and falls dead. Bruno wishes happiness to Mirabel and Mariano, preparing to finally leave for the world of the dead, but Mirabel stops him by putting a ring on her finger and pronouncing a wedding vow - from the bottom of her heart and with sincere love (a small insert from Beetlejuice - marriage with the living returns the dead man to the world of the living) . Mariano marries Dolores, Abuela does not object to the marriage of Mirabel and Bruno - after all, she missed her son so much, and everyone celebrates two weddings concluded out of love, instead of one out of a sense of duty.

Special just the way you are
Eleven years ago, Mirabel wouldn't believe how far she had come today
@encantober-official prompt - Thread
Just a little more left!
Mirabel sat under the fluffy tree. The burning sun crawled against her skin, light wind ruffled her hair. The cold metal pins clanged against each other. This was her day off, so naturally she would spend it on her hobby rather than making embroidery for the local tailor. Nobody seemed really surprised when Mirabel said she was going to tie her life to embroidery.
Mirabel loved embroidery. This was something she realized back in the beginning of school when she was very young. They were taught some basic sewing skills. In the very least how to patch a clothes or embroider something small. And suddenly she found herself drawn to it. Her various skirts were growing in decorations. Same to her family, except for the fact that theirs was professional. But Mirabel didn't feel like she deserved it (sometimes she really wished to hug her younger-self), so she decorated her clothes herself. Stitch after stitch. Even after collapse, embroidery was always a constant. Like an old friend, ready to embrace her no matter the day. If she was anxious, if the walls felt like they would crush... Mirabel would pick her needle and embroider her feelings away. With the passing years the flow of the thread became easier. And the style became finer, more delicate. And she loved how this life was going. Simple but steady.
The woman closed her eyes, listening to the whispers of the faded leaves. After all these years, Mirabel was proud to say she came this far. Yes, pain of the past didn't let go completely. But compared to what was ten years ago? She was in a far better place. There were good days, there were bad days.
There was a heavy thud as somebody dropped besides her. 'Luisa' – she thought briefly. Simply from the estimated size.
"What cha' doin'?" Luisa looked down, resting her head in her hands.
"Oh just some knitting to relax." Mirabel shrugged. "Have you checked Paloma's dress design? Should I start working on the embroidery?"
This was one of the things that made Mirabel nervous lately. This was another gift ceremony to come. And, unlike Teresa, Luisa's daughter was very stubborn. There was no way to force her if she didn't want to comply. So naturally, Mirabel was worried. She was the one decorating her family's clothes for the last few years. And, obviously it included ceremony dresses. With all their white lace and sunny golden flows.
"Looks great to me. But I haven't asked her yet." And even when they asked, knowing her sobrina Mirabel was sure she would find something to complain about in the end. Making her redo the embroidery. Paloma just had to take Mirabel's attention to details and Isabela's demanding nature. The only really good thing is that she wasn't into insane level of energy like Luisa. "Why does my girl grow so fast? I'm so very not ready!"
And Luisa could agree. It feels like just yesterday Mirabel was knitting a blanked to wrap newborn in. Just yesterday Luisa seemed to be freaking out, unsure if she was ready to be a parent. Now she was so grown up. Even if there wasn't such pressure as it used to be back in the day. Ceremony was probably still the most important day for any Madrigal. And Mirabel couldn't allow anything but her best for such an important event. Call her whatever you want, but it was her sobrina. And it was a big event too, pretty much everyone would be at the ceremony. So, there was a worry of not doing it good enough. Failing her supposed job
The fact Paloma was so big already was unbelievable. Needing her very own ceremonial dress. All embroidered and decorated. Jewellery dancing in the snow. And even stranger for Mirabel was her own role at this all. Back at Antonio's ceremony, she would never think anyone dared to give her such an important role. Embellish costume that was the most important for them all.
Of course, Mirabel did decorated clothes for her family included. But when ceremony was such an important event in life, Mirabel felt even more honoured by this. And also wanting it to be even better, even despite Luisa assuring Mirabel she shouldn't overwork herself (and interrupting her work sometimes to ensure Mirabel had rest enough). But then again, it wasn't just about Luisa. It was about a birthday girl. And Mirabel wanted to be sure it was the best day of her life. It was hard, of course. Sometimes thinking about upcoming celebration was just too much. A salt into old wound. Even it was over twenty years, Mirabel wasn't sure she would ever forget it. The trauma didn't define who she was, not anymore. But it was a ever-living presence. She wanted to be present at the ceremony. Just for her love to Luisa. But, just as it happened with Teresa, her parental cousins allowed Mirabel to stay over with them.
But, after doing one more ceremony, after ten years since the last one, when Antonio was getting his own gift, it did calm Mirabel's anxiety a bit. It was all okay, she didn't feel as bad as the last time. And for now, Mirabel wanted to focus on what she had to do in the moment. Bringing the dress to life, painting in write and gold. Just to ensure she made the best dress of all time for her special little girl. And know Paloma would have fun at the party. No matter if it was successful or failed, leaving the girl with empty hands. Let her know her family loved her regardless.

HE SAID WHAT!?
This request is from Lambogo. On Ao3
Request: How about an Encanto idea where isabela & mirabel talk about the rift they had & isabela gives mirabel a heartfelt apology for everything. She then learns what osvaldo (fat guy who said mirabel was not special) said to mirabel & she goes over to him & beats the hell out of him with her gift (ex. Throws cactus🌵 at him, covers him with poison ivy that makes him itchy, makes him eat grass/leaves/flowers, etc.).
Mirabel's POV
I was hanging and talking with my eldest sister, Isabela. It's been about a month since the fall and build of Casita. I can now for sure say, my family are back to the loving people that I know they are, including my abuela and sister. It's been so long since I've had a hug from my abuela and sister, that it brought me to tears whenever they hug me. When that happens, I can see great sorrow and guilt in their eyes. I just smile at them, saying that I understand. Abuela didn't heal after abuelo died, because she had to raise my mama, tio, and tia and didn't have time to heal, and not only that, but had to deal with them when they eventually gotten gifts. As for Isabela, she was under a lot of pressure for being perfect that she went with what abuela's lead in how she treated me in the past. But I can see how hard they are working in getting better at treating me and the rest of the family.
"Anyway, so I wanted to say how sorry for how I treated you in the past, Mirabel," Isa said, knocking me back to the present. I looked at her, and she has this sorrowful face, that it broke my heart a little.
"Like I said Isa, I have forgiven you," I reassured her, smiling which she returned. She just grabbed me and hugged me.
"If I could, I would go back in time, and throw cactus at my past self," she whispered. I chuckled at that, just imaging the look of past Isa after being attacked by her future self.
"If that is how you would react to your past self, then I would hate to see what you'll do to Senor Osvaldo, for what he said on the day of Antonio's gift ceremony," I said, then froze not meaning to say that out loud. I felt Isa tense up, before pulling away to look at me.
"What did he say, Mirabel," she asked with a blank face.
"Nothing," I squeaked out, before running off.
Isabela's POV
I watched as Mirabel ran off, though what she said made my sisterly instincts run wild. What did that fat man say to my little sister. And if Mirabel won't tell me, then I know who to ask. Dolores. I walked to my cousin's room and knocked. Dolores opened her door.
"What did Osvaldo say to Mirabel on Antonio's gift ceramony," I bluntly asked. Dolores' eyes widen and she smiled.
"Finally, you asked," Dolores said, "he said, 'Mirabel, delivery. I got you the special because you're the only Madrigal kid who doesn't have a gift. I call it the 'not special, special' because... you have no gift. Oh, and tell Antonio good luck. The last gift ceremony was a bummer. The last one being yours... that did not work.'"
"HE SAID WHAT!?" I yelled in rage, but quickly apologized to Dolores when I saw her wince and hold her eyes. She waved her in dismissively. I quickly said bye to Dolores and went to search for that fat ass Osvaldo. My hands twitch in anger and anticipation. I felt like a predator hunting her prey. As I was searching, I was also planning on what I'm gonna do to him. I smiled slightly at all the plans I thought of doing.
-----------------Linebreak----------------
I finally found him, and he was stuffing his face with more food. I frowned at him, as he just sat, eating with no remorse for what he said to my sister about a month ago. He should be sitting where he sat, and think about what he said, not eating. I snarled in anger.
"Senor Osvaldo, may I have a word with you," I asked him as I approach. He looked up at me and smiled.
"Sure Isabela," he said, while following me into the woods. Then we were far enough away, and I turned towards Osvaldo with a frown on my face.
"I know what you said to my sister, Mirabel, on Antonio's gift ceremony, and I'm deeply unhappy," I told him, glaring. He gulped in fear and tried to apologize. I hold my hand up to get him to shut up, "you will shut up, so I can dish out your punishment. And let me tell you, no one will believe you if you tell anyone what I'm gonna do."
He started to shake in fear as I slowly walk around him. First, I made some poison ivy and threw them onto him, knowing it usually takes four hours to four days for the symptoms start. Then, I grew some cactus and threw them anywhere I could reach on his body, especially aiming for a certain spot on his body. He cried out in pain, and I smiled. He deserves this. I grew some of my vines to lift him up so I could get the cactus needles out of his skin, so I wouldn't leave any evidence of my involvement. Then, I forgo any other plants and just started punching him. I know it generally takes up to 2-6 hours for bruises to form. Then I kneed him where the sun doesn't shine. I then let him go.
"Let this be a lesson, if I find out you make any form of sentence that causes my sisters any form of hurt, I will continue where I left off, understand," I asked, looking at him. He nodded, crying in pain. I dismissed him, and he ran away. I just watch him leave, "Dolores, I know you are listening, keep an ear out for Osvaldo and anyone who makes any comment about my sisters."

La famiia Madrigal hates Mirabel?(part 1: the photo)
Look, I'm not saying that the Madrigal Familia don't flinch with Mirabel, they do, and I'd be in denial if I didn't admit it- but you greatly simplify the Madrigal Familia's view of Mirabel to "They hate and avoid her all the time ", but it's just me!
except for Alma and Isabela (Even these characters have relations with Mirabel simplified by viewers) there is no other family member who acts antagonistically or shows dislike for Mira.
I will analyze and give my opinion on moments that are used as a reason to hate the Madrigal family- An afrolatina
1- The infamous photo scene from Antonio's ceremony. I have A LOT of opinions about this scene and how people react to it, well let's break it down...
It was wrong that they didn't notice that Mirabel didn't join them, I want to make it clear that I'm not going to relatify their mistakes, they are a family with flaws, with MANY flaws, but I want to see these scenes observing all the nuances and the situations properly
With all that said, you misunderstand both this scene and WOM so hard, what makes Mirabel have an emotional outburst was Alma's phrase "I knew you would make it, a gift as special as you are" and then her expression of proudness starts to unravel BEFORE the family takes the picture, and then Alma calls everyone to join in for the picture and Mirabel stands in the background with her expression completely disgusted, and AFTER the family takes the family picture
And then Mirabel's song starts talking about how she always has to hold her emotions and that she stands aside while her family shines, it was more a song about her imposter syndrome and how much she wants to live up to her family than how many find a song about how her family is mean and hates her(confirmed by director)
And i also saw a lot of people saying that they excluded her on purpose because she doesn't have a gift...well where to start...1-Abuela told EVERYONE to join Photo 2- Agustin and Felix are in the picture and they don't have a gift. 3-A very important point is that Jared bush the director of Encanto confirmed in a Q&A that Mirabel avoids being in family photos thanks to her imposter syndrome, and this photo where she is uncomfortable with Luisa holding her to not leave is proof of that
Conclusion: They were wrong not to have noticed Mirabel's absence, but it's good to take into account the euphoric hype of the moment, they don't hate her for not having a gift or excluded her on purpose, as I showed they didn't exclude her from other photos family or in Luisa's case, make sure he's here. I'm not saying they don't have a certain insensitivity towards Mirabel's situation but the pesskas tend to always see the worst of the Madrigal family without looking deeper into them and that.. saddens me

Agustín never sang during Don't Talk About Bruno, and that lives in my head rent-free at all times of the day AAAAA
---
Bruno hid from the party on the roof, something that Agustín and Félix didn't have to fact-check as Casita helped them up and to its wayward son. Félix had a drink while Agustín brought an old blanket that hadn't been touched since the day Bruno vanished, their target watching the distant fireworks under the eave of his tower.
The poor guy looked frazzled, which wasn't too surprising.
To his credit, Bruno didn't seem too surprised to see them, Agustín settling on his left while Félix settled on his right, the weighted blanket carefully set on Bruno's lap. It's only when he looks over to accept the drink Félix that they see his eyes are entirely glowing green, and the slightly older man smiles.
"You doing alright hermano?" Bruno shrugged, sipping the warm tea as he returned his gaze to the fireworks. The last time they had hung out together was the night before Mirabel's door opening ceremony, beer flowing between them as the three celebrated the upcoming celebration with an admittedly nervous Agustín. It was the last time Bruno had cracked a smile, the man barely leaving his tower as the children were helping the town as he did prophecies almost day and night.
He was gone the next night, and it hurt like nothing else to learn Bruno hadn't gone too far in order to protect his youngest niece.
"Are the kids having fun?" Bruno's whisper was nearly stolen by a firework, but both Fèlix and Agustín were pros at catching his mumbles over the years.
"Sí, they'll be asleep the second everyone goes home." Félix chuckled, having already tucked Antonio into bed before he had gone to find Bruno. The seer smiles at the thought, and Félix sits back against the tower with a hum.
"Eh Bruno...may I ask something?" Agustín hadn't spoken a word since he had followed his fellow in-law, fiddling with a small wrapped package as he glanced over.
"S-Sí, always hermano."
"Why...when did...do you hate us?" Glowing green eyes look over in surprise, and the youngest of the three did his best to not look away.
"Why would I hate you?" It's such a soft question that is filled more with confusion than hatred and Agustín wants to scream.
If it's for Bruno or for himself, he cannot say.
"The family made a song about how you were cursed, every time I said your name the entire village shushed me, the children...how do you not hate us?" Félix is the one to look down in shame as Agustín nearly pleads with Bruno, having done his part to fuel the flames to please his wife.
"I don't care what others think of me, I only wanted to protect Mirabel." His response this time isn't confusion, and Agustín has to take a breath before he does or says something stupid. "You, uh, you never sang."
"No, it was wrong." Agustín was not known as an angry man, but the snarl that escaped him was only a fraction of the anger he felt. "You've never done anything wrong, and I'm sorry you couldn't come to us for what you saw. I failed mi hermano and I can't apologize enough, I'll never be able to apologize enou-"
"You being here is all I need." Bruno reached over to rest a hand on Agustín's knee, those glowing eyes seeming to stare into his soul before the seer smiles, turning to the other man beside him. "Both of you."
"Hope you stick to that tomorrow, you're not going to sneak away again if we have our say." Félix smiled, his guilt shoved into the back of his mind for another time. The trio lapsed into silence once again, the last of the fireworks going off before the town decided it was time to finally rest after spending so long rebuilding Casita, friends embracing before wandering off into the night. Bruno glances down when he feels a small package placed onto his lap, empty mug set aside as he unwraps it to reveal a long chain laden with multicolor glass beads.
"I had that made for your 40th, but..." Agustín sighed, watching Bruno gently run his thumb over the glass. "Better late than never."
"This...gracias." Bruno was already fiddling with the gift, and Agustín showed him the chain was long enough to wrap around his hands in a few fashions to give him easy access. "You remembered.."
"Of course."
Bruno smiles, and if he eventually dozes off against Agustín as their town decides the same, his brother-in-law says nothing. They had their hermano back, and for now that was enough.

Encantober 2023 Day 2: Siblings
Tonight was going to be the best day that the Madrigal grandkids were waiting for for several months; it was their first sibling sleepover since Mirabel’s gift ceremony! They have not had one since then because of how it has affected Mirabel, and the rest of the grandkids did not want her to feel bad. Now that the miracle has been saved and everyone has been doing better than they were before, they decided to bring it back and include Antonio with them now that he has his own room.
When the Madrigal family finished dinner, the grandkids made their way upstairs to grab their sleeping bags and go into Antonio’s room for their party. They decided to have their sleepover in Antonio's room since not only it was his first Madrigal grandkid sleepover, but also since everyone used to have their sleepovers in each of their rooms after their gift ceremony, and now that Antonio has his own room, it was time to have the sleepover in his room.
Mirabel was the first to come to Antonio’s room besides himself. All she needed was her sleeping bag and her homemade bear and change into her pajamas and that was it. A few minutes later, Camilo made his way into his younger brother’s room, changed into his pajamas with his sleeping bag and his stuffed chameleon that Mirabel made for him for his tenth birthday.. He laid his sleeping bag next to Antonio’s and sat in the semi-circle they made.
“I hope I wasn’t too late. I wasn’t able to find Cuddles so I was looking all over for him, but it turned out he fell under the bed.”
“You’re not super late. We were just setting up and making sure Parce stayed in his playhouse for the night with Pico and Chispi. Are the older ones coming soon?”
“They should be. We already know Isabela needs to do her hair before every sleepover we have.” Mirabel rolled her eyes. “I know Dolores needs her earmuffs and Luisa is trying to find Sparkle.”
Right on cue, Isabela and Dolores came into the room together. The duo put their sleeping bags next to Mirabel’s to leave one more space in the circle for Luisa. Now that the five of them are settled in their sleeping bags, cozy with their pajamas on and their plush toys, each handmade by Mirabel, and they could all begin the party. Not that long after, Luisa came into the room with her sleeping bag in one hand and Sparkle, her stuffed unicorn given to her by Alma for her gift ceremony, in the other.
“Lo siento, everybody; I couldn’t find Sparkle anywhere and I didn’t want to come without her. You all know I’ve slept with her every night since she was given to me and I can’t bother to lose her.”
“It’s okay, Luisa. Now that you found her, you can finally be here tonight!” Antonio said excitedly as he hugged his cousin.
Luisa placed her sleeping bag between Dolores and Camilo, now creating a circle of six sleeping bags with all six of the Madrigal grandkids snuggled inside them. Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno came inside with several bowls of snacks; the triplets promised they would bring the snacks upstairs when dinner was finished.
“We brought some Choclitos, Rosquillas, and Mani Motos for you,” Julieta pointed out as she put the bowls in the middle of the sleeping bag circle.
“We figured we’d buy you the snacks you used to beg us to buy every time you wanted to have a sleepover together. The same ones we begged your abuela to buy when we would have the same sleepovers,” Pepa explained.
“We bought them for you for old time’s sake,” Bruno added.
“Gracias, mami, Tia Juli, Tio Bruno,” Antonio replied.
“It’s already feeling like when we were kids all over again,” Mirabel added.
The triplets smiled and left the room together so their kids could have their fun. Camilo and Mirabel then took giant handfuls of the Choclitos and stuffed them in their mouths. Isabela rolled her eyes at her sister and cousin and attempted to hold in a laugh. One thing that has not changed is those two stuffing their faces with snacks whenever they could.
“Do you think maybe we could play a game? Did you guys used to play games at your sleepovers?” Antonio asked.
“Of course we did, Tonito. One of our favorites we used to play was Icebreaker Catch. We have a beach ball with silly questions on them and we would throw it to each other, and the person that catches it has to answer the question that their right thumb is on or closest to,” Isabela explained.
“We used to play it at the camps we used to do when we were kids, so we thought we would play again together,” Dolores said as she took out a beach ball with questions written all over it in permanent marker.
“So, let’s get started!” Mirabel said.
Dolores threw the ball to Antonio, since this was his first time playing and his first sleepover with his siblings. He turned the ball to see where his right thumb landed on, and he found his thumb closest to the question, “What is your worst nightmare?”
Antonio thought a bit before answering. They did not expect his answers to be too intense since he was still young. “My worst nightmare would be losing Mirabel. I remember when she saved the miracle and when we lost the house during that time. Papi was with me and he told me all I was saying was ‘where’s Mirabel? Where’s Mirabel?’ and he couldn’t answer. He didn’t know and it made me scared.”
Mirabel got out of her sleeping bag and gave Antonio a hug. She shed a tear and Antonio hugged her back. “Te amo, Antonio; I’m so sorry if I worried you at any point.”
“It’s okay, Mirabel. I’m just happy you’re here and alive.”
After the two youngest cousins finished hugging, Antonio grabbed the ball and threw it to Camilo. He turned the ball when he caught it and read the question his right thumb landed on, “Have you ever fallen asleep in class?”
Camilo rolled his eyes and tried to hold in a snort. “I think you know the answer to this one already; I’ve fallen asleep in class several times.”
“Well, what was the most memorable time you’ve done so?” Mirabel asked.
“Probably that one time when we were in our eighth grade history class and I came to school so sleep deprived because the night before was so busy that I genuinely couldn’t control myself that time. I guess since everyone expects me to fall asleep near the halfway mark of the period that it was shocking to everyone else in class.”
“It was shocking to me, at least. I never expected you to be asleep at the very beginning of class.”
The grandkids laughed and when they were finished, Camilo popped a Choclito in his mouth and threw the ball to Mirabel. She turned the ball to find her right thumb and read the question, “What do you use when you run out of toilet paper?”
Mirabel blushed, but answered anyway, “When I just run out of toilet paper, I tend to use the roll that comes with it. But when that’s done, I tend to use one of the towels that’s hanging on the racks.”
“You better put those in the hamper to wash after they’re finished!” Isabela yelled when Mirabel confessed.
“No, duh, I do. Do you really think I would just leave towels all over the place that I just wiped myself with? You know I’m better than that!”
“...I’ve been doing the same thing when we run out of toilet paper for years,” Camilo confessed.
Isabela groaned and laid down on her sleeping bag to recoup from the confessions. Dolores tapped on her shoulder to get up and Mirabel threw the ball to Luisa. She turned the ball and found her right thumb on the question, “Have you ever peed your pants in public?”
Luisa put the ball down slowly next to her as she answered. “I remembered there was this one time when I was in seventh grade, I was giving a presentation in my literature class, and I remember this was the first time I ever had an oral presentation in a class I also had with Gabriela. You guys knew I liked her since I started puberty, and when I was in the middle of my presentation, I felt my legs shaking and something wet in my underwear, and my teacher pulled me aside to ask me if I was aware that I peed myself. She let me go to the bathroom and finish the presentation after I cleaned myself and changed my clothes. I did feel a bit better afterwards because my nerves were let out the first time.”
Isabela and Mirabel moved to Luisa to give her a hug. They had no idea she embarrassed herself in front of Gabriela almost a decade ago, and wanted to give her the biggest hug imaginable for telling them about that.
“Hey, at least Gabriela knows that you like her and you’re both very happy together,” Isabela pointed out.
After the cool-colored sisters finished their hug, Luisa threw the ball to Isabela and she turned the ball to see what question her right thumb landed on. She found it and read the question, “Have you ever stolen something?”
Isabela thought before answering the question. “I remember this one time when Dolores and I were in high school and we were in town square with a couple of friends, and I found a pack of gum on a stand that it wasn’t supposed to be. I decided since I couldn’t find where it was supposed to be, I decided to put it in my pocket and continue window shopping with Dolores and our friends.”
Luisa, Dolores, and Mirabel giggled. “That was it? You never stole anything bigger than a pack of gum?” Luisa asked.
“I couldn’t think of any other time I stole something! You really think Senorita Perfecta would steal a car or a handbag?”
“That is true,” Camilo said. “I wouldn’t expect anything more than just a pack of gum when you were my age.”
Isabela threw the ball to Dolores, ending the first round. Dolores turned the ball to find her right thumb and read the question, “Have you ever re-gifted a gift?”
Dolores thought before answering. “I remember a couple years ago, I got this sweater from Abuela for Christmas, and while I loved it at first, when I put it on it itched so badly that I couldn’t bother to keep it anymore. So I re-gifted it that next Christmas at a party to a friend that also loved it so much and felt much more comfortable with her than with me. When Abuela noticed I wasn’t wearing it anymore, I told her the truth about how it felt on me and how I had no choice but to give it away. She was visibly upset, but from then on she asked me before she would buy clothes for me if it was comfortable first.”
“I know you thought about giving that sweater to me at first, and when I tried it on it was a little bit uncomfortable on me too, not as much as with you but still up there,” Isabela added on. “But I know Abuela appreciates you telling the truth to her.”
The grandkids continued playing more games throughout the night and eating the snacks their mothers and uncle gave to them beforehand until they each drifted to sleep one by one very late that night. Once the lights were turned off by Mirabel, the last one to fall asleep, she made her way inside her sleeping bag and took her glasses off to lay down. It was not until Antonio woke up seconds later to tap on Mirabel’s shoulder.
“Hey, Mira?”
“Yes, Antonio?”
“I just want to say this was the best sleepover ever. I hope we get to do it more often.”
“I hope so too, Tonito. I missed this and I’m sure everyone else missed it too.”
The cousin duo smiled at each other before falling asleep at the same time. All six of the Madrigal grandkids were visibly happy they got to do another sleepover again after not having one in a long time, with all of them smiling in their sleep. It was clear they wanted to do it all over again, and they would be planning the next one as soon as they woke up.

Encanto Ever After
A Encanto x Ever After High Crossover Idea
Mirabel Madrigal fails to see the cracks at Antonio's gift ceremony and returns to the nursery feeling disheartened. On her bed she finds a mysterious golden book and picks it up. while looking at it she softly weeps and wishes she could go somewhere where she would be enough. then in the book glows golden and transports Mirabel to the land of ever after. Once there she eventually attends ever after high school and makes friends with pretty much all the students there. Friends like raven queen (daughter of the evil queen), Maddie hatter (daughter of the mad hatter), ginger Bread house (daughter of the candy witch from Hansel and Gretel), Apple white (daughter of snow white), lizzie hearts (daughter of the queen of hearts), darling charming (daughter of king charming and sister of daring and dexter charming), cerise hood ( daughter of little red riding hood and the big bad wolf) kitty Cheshire (daughter of the Cheshire cat) and many other. Mirabel then decides to leave the madrigals behind and start a new life in ever after. Meanwhile in the Encanto the madrigal family are falling apart finding Mirabel missing and the miracle begins to fade, and casita starts cracking. The plot twist I have is that Mirabel getting sent to ever after is a plot by the evil queen to steal the magic of Encanto and take over both the fairytale world and real world. then it's up to Mirabel and her new friends to save the Encanto and stop the evil queens reign of terror.

LTRL AU | Photographic Reminders
Mirabel found herself back in her room, her mood soured but she…decided to keep proactive as she mulled in quiet anger by pulling out some of grey and white fabric and sat down by her machine. Knitting would be better, but she’d rather not test her patience with overly large needles and her mood at the same time.
Camilo’s repetitive snide prodding was annoying. While she knew she couldn’t talk him out of his distaste of her sister, she hoped he’d at least…try to keep his mouth more retrained around her…and Antonio for that matter as well. She didn’t want to hear it.
She didn’t want that…negativity.
Mirabel didn’t get too far into cutting the fabric along the pattern she had for a little hat—a knitted hat would be best for a…baby but she wanted to get this done quickly to show her sister support— before a knock at her door pulled her attention.
Mirabel sighed softly, “Come in.”
To her surprise, it was Abuela. Mirabel quickly set her fabric down and scissors in a manner that’d make it hard to see what her plans were—glad for one she hadn’t made paper notes on this. God forbid, Isabela would never give her for letting this slip.
“Are you okay, Mirabel?” Abuela asked, stepping in though she sounded…careful.
Mirabel nodded, swallowing down her frustrations, her fingers coming to pull at the white threading closer, “Si, Abuela.”
That didn’t convince Abuela by the expression on her face nor did it look that her hint for Abuela to leave didn’t land either as she came further in.
“I…heard you talking to Camilo, I was…worried.”
Of course, Abuela did, though Mirabel realized for a second… there was a huge chance Abuela could have heard what she and Dolores had talked with Luisa about. But… if Camilo hadn’t heard, then maybe they were spared that news drop? Mirabel desperately hoped so.
“It’s…nothing. I’m just…frustrated.”
“It didn’t sound like a new frustration, Mirabel. I am open for you to talk to if you need it?” this was less than an offer, more like a reminder Mirabel had from the last…deep talk Abuela had tried those months ago. The first time had been…nice to hear but now, it felt less…optional. Like
“You’ll just get mad at me, Abuela.” Mirabel stated quietly, “You won’t like what I have to say.”
“That’s not true, Mirabel.”
Mirabel inhaled deeply, “Really? Because any time anyone says or does something you don’t like, you get angry and they back down and do what you want.” She replied though winced at how it sounded but she couldn’t take back the words, even as Abuela blinked in surprise. “Sorry.”
Abuela came in further, though her expression became…puzzled. “What are you talking about?”
Mirabel exhaled angrily, the heat oddly simmering again under the surface. “You! Abuela, you! After my failure of a gift ceremony, I was a second-rate grandchild up until Isa hurt me and then I’m put in her place and she’s left living in the sewer about it.” She snapped, “And now, people keep telling me how I should feel when they don’t know how I actually feel. They think it’s their job to keep me safe when I can judge that myself.”
“They’re just looking out for you,” Abuela spoke, bypassing entirely the whole analogy involving Isa for now it seemed.
“I didn’t ask and I should have the right to do that. Isa’s not the only walking hazard if people keep referring to gifts and the dangers. Camilo can literally trick people into handing over goods or gain access to houses with deception if he decided to abuse his gift, and Luisa… well I don’t need to go into the risks she could pose by a light nudge… and Tia Pepa… she’s struck a lot of people with lightening…and hurt them but no one’s putting her in house arrest for it.” Mirabel stopped at the hand gesture Abuela gave.
“We deal with those instances as they come, Mirabel,” Abuela spoke if a little uneasy. “Camilo will never use his gift to hurt anyone or deceive them. He knows the punishments outweigh any rewards there.”
Mirabel wanted to point out more with Tia Pepa but… couldn’t. It wasn’t fair to use Tia’s gift when she clearly struggled with it still. “What is it about Isa’s gift that scares you so much?” Mirabel opted to go for it. “Is it that…she made them or that she can control them?”
“It’s a complicated answer, Mirabel.” Abuela deflected. “I thought her gift was wonderful, but all I saw was the roses, not the thorns.”
“Thorns are there to protect the rose, Abuela.” Mirabel pointed out, “I know i… I can’t convince you to let go of what’s holding you back with Isabela, but just…can’t you allow me to make my own choices in regard to my sister? I know now the risks I’m taking.”
“Aren’t you scared of her? That she could do that again.”
“Anyone is capable of anything, depending on the moment. I…I’m not over my fear of her but… I won’t let my fear of her keep me from her.” Mirabel carefully spoke, “It’s taken me months…to want to be around her to try and get through it. I think… I heard it was called ‘Exposure Therapy’?” She wasn’t entirely sure but Dolores had mentioned it from someone in town who once had a fear of dogs, and bought of puppy that they were now smittened with like it was their own kid. It was a…logical assumption she could do the same… sort of.
“Don’t you want your family to look out for you? Your parents? Me?”
“Not at the expense of the family, Abuela. Not when they’re got their own problems they’ve not talked about. I don’t know what’s happened with Mama but she seems a little out of it. Luisa’s…upset because of what you asked of her—”
“I had—“
“Abuela, please let me talk. Otherwise, I won’t.” Mirabel gave her Abuela a firm look though with a short nod, Abuela let her continue. “I don’t want to get involved with what happened in that regard. You had your reasons, Isa has her, Luisa was stuck in the middle and I have nothing to do with it.” Mirabel hadn’t tried to get too involved in that either. She’d much rather handle herself right now whenever Isa was involved in any shape or form. “What I’m saying is… everyone is dealing with problems. I know how to handle mine.” Mirabel finished softly. “Let me be angry or scared on my terms, I will talk to Isa on my terms; she can respect that.”
Abuela's lips pursed tightly, her posture tense. “She could have killed you, Mira.”
“And it took that for you to actually care about me.” Mirabel recoiled from the harshness of her words though Abuela stiffened up, looking positively offended.
“Mirabel,” her voice dropped of all warmth.
“Mirabel,” Another voice echoed through the door, enough for Mirabel to take that lifeline away and Casita opened it to see her mother in the doorway.
Julieta’s face was…as tired as Mirabel remembered, her hair coming a little out from it’s bun but Mirabel happily pulled her into a hug. Her mother’s arms were slow and carefully on her sides but she enjoyed her hugs even if it felt like she was treating her like fragile glass.
“Do you still need help with the decorations?” Mirabel hoped, pulling back.
“You’re cousins are still working on it, I could do with some help with setting the table.”
“Okay.” Though without a backward look, Mirabel let her mother lead her away from Abuela’s silent mood because she was not for pushing anymore. Abuela had certainly heard her but…would she listen was another matter.
-
Bruno couldn’t help himself as he hurried back towards Casita, his mind mulling on the new information he had and…he felt happy. It was an odd feeling and he wasn’t sure how long it would last but… he couldn’t help himself as he made his way through the bustling party of the night and the box in his hand was certainly a treasure he wasn’t just going to let slip.
Casita opened willingly for him, the family was about but he found one of his sisters easily who lay across against her husband’s side.
“Pepa, get Juli and meet me in my room. I’ve got something to show you and I can’t wait!”
Pepa’s face turned bemused at his antics, her cloud above her head only a light fog with a light patch of a rainbow which still indicated she was still happy, despite her confusion. He’d take that for now.
“Ay, you should go.” Felix encouraged happily, “I’ve never seen Bruno this pumped for anything unless he’s downed all the coffee and wants to show you some new rat tricks.”
Bruno blew his brother-in-law a raspberry.
“Fine, but I don’t want to stay away for too long.” Pepa begrudgingly rose to her feet, detangling from Felix’s limbs as well but Bruno grinned at her and hurried back towards his room.
He set the box down on the side, the candles in the room lit up with a more pleasing warmth in his good mood and grabbed the stools and set them up in a little circle and waited. His hands felt dry and he knocked softly on the wooden bedside.
“Knock, knock, knock, knock on wood.” He whispered to himself, the familiar notion settling the slight nerve of anxiety in his gut until his door finally opened.
“Bruno,” Julieta’s voice was soft, “what do you have to show us?” the edge of wanting to leave was not present, but he could feel her reluctance was enough of that statement but he didn’t let that linger. Nope.
“Take a seat.” He encouraged, his hands coming to pick up the box he had. “So, you know I wasn’t at lunch earlier, Señora Rojas invited me into her store.”
“My mother-in-law?” Julieta’s eyebrows shot up, “Why did you go? You don’t know her.”
Bruno shrugged, “Curiosity… and I’m super glad I did because I…learned so much.”
“You picked up sewing?” Pepa settled most, leaning back in her chair.
“Only from Mirabel.” Bruno waved that excuse off. “She wanted to talk to me and we did but… did you know that… she knew Papa.”
That pulled both his sister’s full attention onto him as he hoped. Pepa’s cloud darkened a little and Julieta’s smile vanished, both brown and green eyes set onto him with a more serious edge.
“What?”
“Agustín’s Mama knew our Pa. They grew up in the same street!” He smiled, “She told me all of these stories about him and… and took me to a few others that knew the Madrigal family. Pa moved out of the street to live with Mama closer to the edge of town.” Bruno waffled as he set the box down. “One person has a lot of photos. The photographer’s family used to take a lot of photos of people in town to test out their new invention. Our Pa’s family were a few that volunteered to help so… there’s a good few of them that’s survived this long.”
Inside, there were eighteen photos. A third of them were barely eligible, too much light or too little light, three looked to show faint outlines of movement in slow-capture—as Señor Acevedo had explained—but the others were more intact and easy to see.
“Should…should we take this to Ma?” Julieta asked carefully, her eyes flickering towards the door as she watched him pull out the little stack.
“No, because she never talks about our Pa. She’ll just take this away and I want to talk about him.” Bruno decided, surprising a little himself of his vindication but… this felt right. If Ma never wanted to talk to them about their Pa, then they should find out more about him from other people. “We deserve to know him, don’t we? The other Madrigals that didn’t make it here?”
Both his sisters shared a look and Pepa’s cloud darkened even more but Pepa’s resolve crumbled first. “It would be nice.”
Bruno passed her the first photo: Their grandparents, Papa and Tia, but in this photo, their Tia was four years old and crying her eyes out on their grandmother’s lap. Their father, six years old stood solemnly at his father’s side, holding his hand and a book hugged to his chest. “This is our Tia, Luciana Isabela Madrigal. She’s two years younger than our Pa. Our grandparents—ooh you know he’s a red head!”
-
Alma had wondered where her triplets had gone to. Both Agustín and Felix were drinking together and no sign of their wives but Felix had mentioned they were talking to Bruno. Alma couldn’t ask Dolores for his location… for some reason, Pepa had neglected to inform her what punishments she had given Dolores for her part in Isabela’s secret affair behind their back, being grounded was clearly not part of it. It seemed Dolores had once again opted to go with the Guzman’s for the nightly celebrations for Novenas. Why were members of her family disappearing off?
Novenas were a family celebration.
They should be here in Casita. A home big enough for them all.
Alma knew it’d be best to invite both the Rojas and the Castillo to Casita for the 24th for certain. Maybe Isabela would actually put the effort in to be here than wallow in her shame. Her actions could be ignored in favor of the family for the time being. It’d be nice to have a reasonable holiday after such a horrible year.
After which, it would be Camilo’s 16th birthday in the four days following Nochebuena. Another celebration but also the day of pranks. Very fitting for the boy’s antics.
“Casita, where’s Bruno?”
The answer was swift as Casita shifted their tiles along and up to the steps. His room. She should have checked there first. At least she didn’t have to worry about him in the walls, now it’s blocked off and plastered up.
Her feet guided her swiftly up and away, from the laughing voices of Camilo and Mirabel and along toward’s Bruno’s tower.
She paused, if for a moment as she noticed only five steps remained up to his door instead of the fifteen she was well acquainted with. Alma pondered in it if only for a moment before she knocked once and opened the door.
All three triplets were inside, Pepa jumped the most, her thunder almost striking Julieta though all three stopped their conversation and hurriedly began to shove what they had into the box.
“Mama, can’t you wait until you’re invited before you walk in? That’s becoming a bad habit.” Pepa huffed, straightening up though her cloud rumbled with her annoyance.
“I knocked and unlike my daughters, there’s little chance to walk in on you in the marital bed.” She had learned swiftly with her daughters in that respect.
“Doesn’t make it okay, Ma.” Bruno stared. “As an adult, I want you to respect my privacy and personal boundaries, so please knock and wait like everyone else. Otherwise, I’ll install a lock on my door like what Señora Rojas has done.”
Alma sniffed but nodded nonetheless. It hardly changed much in the grand scheme of things. “Why are you all here? The party is downstairs.”
The looks between were so familiar, the looks they often gave when they had no excuse and were caught doing something they shouldn’t. Which, nowadays, was now the next generation that held those looks and expressions. She hadn’t expected that from her children now.
“What have you done?”
“Nothing. It’s a conversation between us triplets.” Bruno answered, coming to his feet but something flew off his lap, and onto the floor, enough for her to see it was a photograph.
Her head tilted but she was quick to get it before any of her children could, holding it away before Pepa could grab it which only indicated this was important and secret. She wasn’t ready for more secrets. Not now.
“What is this?”
“That’s a gift!” Bruno hissed, “Careful!”
Alma gave her son a look, though held a hand up to stop either of her daughters from going for this. At first, it was mostly just dark color but she could pick out the faces soon enough. It took a second before she felt her chest pause as she noticed the familiar face. Her eyes rose sharply to Bruno. "What is this?” her tone was cool, “Why do you have a photo of your father here? How did you get this?”
Bruno held his head high. “I went into town and asked people.” His tone was oddly confident, “I had no idea people in town knew him. It never even occurred to me beforehand until I was having a friendly conversation with an elder in town.”
Julieta made a soft snort in the back of her throat.
Alma didn’t lift her gaze off him. They had…gone into town and… spoke to people? She couldn’t fathom why he’d do that at all at a time like this? How could…he even ask for such a thing from people who barely knew Pedro? Most had only really met when they had fled. If they were asking, then people would surely think she was callous to not speak of their father when she had done. The family had enough rumors as it was, she didn’t need anything tied to herself.
“You shouldn’t have needed to bother people at Novenas when they’re already dealing with personal family celebrations. I’ve told you plenty about your father and what he did for all of us. What he meant to all of us.”
“But we don’t know him.” Pepa gritted out tightly, “You don’t talk about him so how can we see him for him or care as much as you about him? We were babies when you lost all of this.” Her hand gestured to the three of them and then over the photographs. Her clouds thundering with her words “We don't know what we've missed so don’t get angry when we just want to know more about our family that you were unwilling to share with his own children.”
That stung hitting far deeper than Alma even expected in terms of her lost beloved. She knew that pain far too easily as it sat with her like a constant reminder. A companion through her journey but not one of choice, when it’s truth, was always there. Her husband was gone and the family she had made with her in-laws was snatched away long before that. Either dead or scattered, she couldn’t know as they had fled without burning distant time by checking. She had been safe knowing Pedro was with her, that she had all she needed with him beside her.
“Knowing he’s a great man is one thing,” Bruno carried on fidgeting, “but it would have been nice to know he disliked Bollo de Mazorca or wasn’t fond of the way you bent the edges of a book’s page to mark your spot…”
Alma’s head tilted softly though she felt the bristle at one such false fact. “Pedro loved Bollo de Mazorca I made for him.” She knew that because he always smiled and thanked her for the meals she gave him at work before they kissed and she’d return home for a rest. The pregnancy with the triplets had been harder for her to get out and continue her daily traditional of giving him his lunch but she made do to keep on that.
“Agustín believes that I think he likes Tajadas de Plátano but that doesn’t mean he turns the side dish down then it’s at the table. He’ll often have Mirabel take from off his plate when he thinks I haven’t seen.” Julieta spoke, “I…enjoy his attempts to try and enjoy even what he doesn’t like in what I make.” Her smile was soft, her eyes far away.
But that didn’t make Alma feel too happy. Pedro had lied to her? What was it that he disliked? Her preparation? The texture? She could hardly fathom him throwing it out. He complimented her skills in the kitchen whenever he saw her cooking so… why did he not say anything?
“Ma,” Bruno’s voice pulled her back to the moment,
Though Alma realized that tears had formed in her eyes, her hand came to brush them away. “I thought he liked my cooking.”
“Ma, he only kept eating Bollo de Mazorca because you made them for him.” Bruno spoke, “I think he loved all the effort you put into it to not dissuade you. Can’t you see that just makes him more…human? Someone with likes and dislikes… you know all the quirks and habits he had. We don’t.” Bruno looked down. “All we have are hollow stories.”
Alma sucked in a shallow breath. Hollow stories. She hated that phrase with a severe passion…but she could see the weight he had put into it; what it meant for them. She didn’t want to talk about him. It resurfaced the same pain but…with the desire for him and the longing that came with missing his presence.
“I…I can’t.” Alma admitted, “It’s…too painful to talk about him.”
“Ma,” Julieta moved from her stool. “Can’t you…try? Share that burden and pain with all of us?”
Alma shook her head. “It’s not a weight I want you to have.”
Pepa’s cloud thundered a little, breaking the second of silence before she picked up a photograph and held it in front of her face. Alma lent back immediately, her hand grabbing Pepa’s wrist to force it back a little.
“We lost our entire family that day except you, Mama. Everyone knows what mood I’m in and judged me on that, Julieta’s got a mess happening between her daughters, and Bruno’s lived in the walls of our own home for ten years. What weight can’t we handle, Ma?” Pepa fired swiftly, “We’re your children, your family now. That should matter more. I’ve only now come to realize that importance with Dolores and my sons.”
Alma couldn’t meet Pepa’s eye, her gaze lingering on the photo of Pedro of his 6th year of life and…unaware that he had only 20 years left. Her hand let go of Pepa’s wrist, pulling the photograph free of her fingers. He looked so small and serious in this picture. Always did when he was taken away from what he wanted to do. His grip on his book seemed to indicate why.
“He wanted to read,” Alma stated, not looking up from the picture. “He only ever got this serious was…when he was interrupted and had to follow his father’s instructions… Something you two of did when you were younger when you’re interrupted.” Pepa was the odd one out and went straight into a tantrum.
She supposed… she could share a little. For them.
-
The night had progressed and it was bittersweet but for the best as Mama finally let down a few of her walls. Enough to talk about Papa and what she knew of the other Madrigals but it wasn’t without the feeling she was still holding back. Something that Bruno hoped was a start to get her opening up... and to actually talk as a mother to children than Matriarch to children.
Mama had left with a few photographs but Bruno had been careful to keep the rest safe and in a box before they all went their separate ways. His sisters to their husbands, Mama to the party and Bruno just went to bed.
But as light and as happy as he was, the headache had had didn’t vanish. Even as he threw salt, prayers, and knocked on wood, it didn’t get better as te night went on.
The headache had only grown as Bruno had tried to sleep, the ticking and trickling swirls of the future were calling until he found himself sipping out of his bed in a huff and trudged through his sand wall; letting it rain over him and down, the sand dune down forming into steps down until it got to the stairs up. But, since his return, there were considerably less steps than before, but enough he felt no particular desire to go up so, he opted for the easy route.
He stepped up to the step-up entry then snapped his fingers twice and under him, the slab rose like an elevator, not touching the sides to risk hitting the steps that lined all the way up until finally, he reached the top.
It descended way after him, not that he cared too much on the way down, and hurried towards his vision cave as the pain and green began to grow behind his eyes like a warm, pressure.
He found the incense quickly and kicked away the vision shards he hadn’t wanted to remove from the pit and with a handful of salt over his shoulder, he sunk into the familiar ritual of his vision.
The sand began to rise, filtering with green as he pushed his energy out into it, lessening the burden of his mind before he let himself pull what awaited him.
There were flickers of many things, like Mirabel sewing in her room or Agustín tripping over a plant pot, accidentally pulling Julieta down with him which seemed to make her smile. A newborn baby boy staring up from his birthing bed looking shocked to be in the world—nothing on the mother as she was obscured by the backs of other people around her assisting.
Bruno had no idea what that was about but another future called, something closer. Soon.
Isabela in town’s plaza and close to the renovating church, a sidewards’s view that changed as she moved, her arm shooting out before vines sprung up through town—wrapping up and pulling a figure from his spot towards her.
“No!” Not again.
The future faded into a pool of sand as the emerald formed, though his heart thudded in his chest as he stared at the image.
This was the third quarterback view, Isabela’s back mostly at them, but her posture wasn’t changed, her arm out but this time… the vines were wrapped around Camilo. A tilt though turned the image subtly but no less horrifyingly; Antonio instead in the vines.
What…could have pushed Isabela to do this, this time? Bruno had no idea… but there were a lot of missing pieces.
He just wished it gave him and time and a date….because clearly, nothing was going to end well if he couldn’t interfere, as futile as it was. He couldn’t let that happen to his sobrino just as much as he couldn’t let Isa do something without a reason. She couldn’t possibly be attacking, could she?

We Don't Talk About Alma❓❗
I hope no one's done this. Like I'm going insane with this idea. I'm serious.
Basically, after Mirabel's ceremony, after everyone had left and the family had gone to bed, she doesn't immediately go to Bruno for a vision. She kind sits in the candle room and looks at the candle. And what does she figure? It's her fault Mirabel didn't get a gift.
Now you might think she thought it was because she out pressure on the family, but that's not it. She doesn't even think about it. The candle flickered in her hands. So her logic is she must not be fit to be the candle her, she did something wrong. So when she's sure everyone's asleep, she leaves the candle in the nursery, telling a sleepy Mirabel to watch over it, and leaves. How she ends up in the walls I'm not sure. Casita probably showed her and she saw it as a chance to be with her family but not hurting the magic, so she stays in there.
Mirabel is out in charge of the candle. It was left in the nursery. Mirabel didn't really hear Alma that night, as Alma was telling her a lot of stuff, but she did hear the last part. And then that was the last anyone say of her. Literally, Mirabel was the last to see her, and then was gone. The next, Mirabel's door reappeared; she was holding the candle. This was because Alma, technically speaking, stepped down from being the candle holder, so it went to the next one in line; which was Mirabel. Of course the family was ecstatic, and another party was being planned. They hadn't even actually realized Alma was gone. Mirabel didn't reveal what she heard last night yet and everyone in the family kind of just assumed Alma knew and was around. Even though...no one...saw her???
Anyway, it isn't until townspeople start coming to Casita that someone asks "Where's Alma?". That prompted the family to search for her, on the DL of course. Mostly the adults, the kids were having too much fun playing in Mirabel's new room. When they couldn't find her, they didn't quite announce it. Once the party was over and the kids were asleep, they went looking for her all throughout Casita more throughly. Bruno was the one who finally noticed that Alma's door had gone dark. And when they went in, it was like no one had been in it for years. It was dark, dusty and there was scorch marks in certain places. The candle room looked abandoned, and the actual candle had been placed in Mirabel's room.
Kids found out later on and Mirabel's told everyone what Alma said to her the night of her birthday. Dolores couldn't even find Dolores; she said she could hear something but she wasn't entirely sure if it was her or not. Morale was made candleholder, but didn't step up to the role as leader until she was about 10. Courtesy of her parents.
Though, Antonio, afyer learning about gifts and what not, had a, very rational actually, fear that Mirabel would just disappear like Alma did. Other family sort of have a fear of that as well. Mirabel assures the family, and more importantly Antonio, that she wouldn't of course.
Also Alma's line the The Family Madrigal is changed.
"My Abuela Alma-"
"We Don't Talk About Alma!"
"...One day they she saw the candle flicker, and then she suddenly disappeared."
The thing is, it was implemented not because they didn't like her, or because she was weird. It was because it made the triplets sad to talk about her. Pressured or not, that was still their mother, and they loved her, so when she just uped and disappeared, it was kind of jarring to them. So, Agustín and Félix told the kids not to talk about Abuela near them, and then the town kind of picked up on it. Kind of an unspoken rule. Antonio has no idea who she is, and Luisa, Camilo and Mirabel barely remember her. They were too young.
No one knows why she left. Dolores can’t properly hear her, and Bruno’s visions never make sense.

Saving a miracle is a lot and comes at a hefty price. Good thing nobody warned Mirabel ahead of time, wouldn’t want her to be able to consider what she’s doing before making rash decisions.
Vaguely inspired by @yellowcry’s Cursed Gifts AU.
Sequel to And I’m Asking “Why, Lord?”
Warning for sensitive topics below.
Time Eats All His Children in the End
Mirabel blinks, slowly coming back to it all. She’s lying on the floor of Antonio’s room, surrounded by grains of sand and burnt leaves. There is no sign of Bruno. Distantly, she can still hear the animals and Antonio playing nearby, splashing in the water. She manages to push herself up, sitting, having to balance herself with her hands.
What happened?
There is no obvious sign that anything has changed. No magic in her veins, no power at her command. Some small, naive part of her thinks it wasn’t real.
Then, her eyes drop down to herself and her stomach churns in disgust and horror. Her dress is completely shredded, hanging loose and in tatters. Her glasses have been knocked to who knows where, she can’t see them. It’s cold. She feels like a pinned butterfly, having its wings removed and its insides pulled apart. She’s on display. For something, someone not human. He has done something to her, taken something or changed something, and she has no idea what.
“Mirabel! You’re awake!” Antonio calls. She turns to find Parce pounding up towards her, the little boy riding on his back. His smile drops as he catches her. “Tío Bruno said to check on you that when you wake up… Mirabel, are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m fine, Antonio,” she reassures him. As scared as she is, she doesn’t want to have him feel the same. But God, her voice is rough.
He clocks his head in confusion at her. After a moment, he shares a glance with the capybara that still hasn’t moved and nods in confirmation. “You don’t look okay and Chipsi agrees.”
“I… to be honest, I wasn’t quite prepared for the vision.” She lied. Well, partially.
Antonio, too young and oblivious, takes that as the gospel truth. “Oh, okay! We never really get to talk about Bruno and I had no idea what having a vision was like! So, what was it like? What did you see? Did you see the future? Was I all grown up? Was I taller than Camilo?”
“I’m sorry, but you know we weren’t looking at your future, primito. And I can assure you, I didn’t see anything you want to see.”
“Okay,” he huffed, sounding disappointed. “Next time Tío Bruno visits, I’m gonna ask him to give me a vision. Do you want to come and play with me and my friends?”
She shakes her head, gently. “No, thank you, Antonio. I have some embroidery to finish.”
Once she’s out of Antonio’s room and with the door safely closed behind her, she doesn’t have to act like she’s fine. She feels horrible about it, but she had to lie Antonio. This is nothing for a child to know, to be part of it, but she is a child and nobody thought to spare her…
It’s too much.
She stops, catching her reflection in the photographs of the ceremonies. Everyone minus her. That hasn’t changed then. Briefly, she considers taking Bruno’s off the wall and throwing it away. But, she doesn’t. She keeps walking. At least, she takes a few more steps before collapsing to her knees. Wincing at the sting of impact against her hands as she catches herself.
Casita flickers its tiles beside her, asking if she’s alright. The answer is blatantly obvious.
She feels horrible and betrayed and used and broken and worthless and—
She wraps her arms around herself, trying to calm herself down. It’s all too much. She can’t just bottle this up as she does with everything else.
Digging her nails into her skin, she scratches. Deep. Drawing blood. She doesn’t care, she screams through it like a dying animal. She wants to tear it all off. She wants to let herself bleed to death because at least then she won’t ever know what he’s done to her. The family will still be safe, the miracle will still survive. No one will care if she doesn’t. And maybe that is what hurts the most: the reality that no one would care what has happened to her. That’s why it did happen.
From her knees, she drops to her side. Curled into a ball and facing the plain, empty wall. Blocking out whatever Casita is trying to say to her. It is only a house. If it had never cracked in the first place, if it had never made her run to get help. She never asked for this, she never wanted this. She prays for it all to go away.
Eventually, her voice cracks. Her screams break off into sobbing, wretched and pitiful.
She can’t breathe through it. She tries, quick and frantic and mad, but she isn’t getting air. It slips through her lips, just as her door slipped from her all those years ago. Just as the last shred of her hope has slipped through her fingers into a dead man’s hand. She wants to rip apart her body and clean it, cleanse it in holy water. Clear away the damage and stains of a curse she doesn’t understand.
Pedro has taken something from her, and she will never be the same again.
Taken something. Stolen everything. And she had let it happen. She had trusted Bruno and then trusted him. And poor pathetic, little Mirabel couldn’t even save herself. She had asked for a blessing, now one has cut a place inside of her, buried into her like a parasite. Eating her out from the inside and will leave her a rotting corpse for the worms must be fed.

Second generation sisters AU
An AU where the blue sisters are the original siblings and have the triplets' gifts!
Kinda similar to the matriarch Julieta AU, but a bit different.
Note: So as I was writing this, the family tree kinda turned into a mess (Julieta being Alma in here, but Pepa and Bruno being the Isabela and Mirabel role respectively). So…😅
Enjoy!
Julieta remembered having a different life with her late husband. Back than, they got married, and had Isabela and Luisa. But everything got destroyed when the village got raided and Agustín was killed, the day their third daughter was born...
But that day, the miracle was born.
Julieta raised her three daughters in a living house called Casita, while she dealt with her grief in the background. Tho that didn’t mean she wasn’t there for her kids.
The sisters also got gifts. Isabela could control the weather with her emotions, Luisa could heal with her food, and Mirabel could see the future.
As the years passed, the three sisters served the town using their gifts.
The town however, pressured Mirabel to constantly do visions for them and get mad at her when they turn out negative…
Growing up, Isabela and Mirabel never had a good relationship. The former often gossiped about and bullied the latter, yelling at her when Mira got an uncontrollable vision, or whenever she’s “in her way.”
So, you could imagine Luisa being caught in the center of the conflict.
Over time, Isabela and Luisa met their husbands, and got married.
But, on Isabela’s wedding day when she was getting wed to Mariano, Mirabel got an unexpected vision during the ceremony, which resulted into Isabela causing a thunderstorm out of anger.
Yeah, it didn’t end well, and Isabela held a huge grudge towards Mirabel about that…
But another few years went by, and Isabela and Luisa started their families, making Julieta a grandmother.
Isabela and Mariano got three kids; Pepa, Camilo and little Alma.
Luisa and her husband got two kids; Dolores and Antonio.
And Mirabel had a son from a short relationship in which the father immediately ran out. She called him Bruno.
The next generation of Madrigals all got their gifts as well; Pepa could grow flowers, Dolores got super hearing, Camilo could shape-shift, Antonio could talk to animals, and Alma would soon get a gift as well.
But Bruno, the second oldest grandchild, didn’t get a gift. And worse, the day after his ceremony, his mamá disappeared…
The now 5 year old boy didn’t understand why his mamá would leave the family, as Tía Isabela liked to say it, but Abuela Julie and Tía Luisa were sad too…
But life went on…
Since he didn’t have a gift, Bruno had to stay in the nursery, and Pepa made sure to remind him of how useless he was because of his “giftless-ness”.
Yeah, Bruno’s and Pepa’s relationship was pretty much the same as Isa’s and Mira’s, especially given that Pepa was the golden child…
And being her golden child, Isabela paired her daughter up with a nice man named Félix, setting up an engagement.
While Pepa was happy and excited about this, Félix wasn’t. He didn’t want to be forced to marry someone he didn’t love, let alone someone who bullied her primo.
And Bruno? Well, he had to live in the shadow of his amazing family on a daily basis, all while having a missing mother and his Tía and Pepa constantly reminding him how unspecial he was compared to them.
Sure, Bruno had his Abuela Julieta and Tía Luisa who were always there for him, but he missed his mother, even tho he couldn’t remember her all that well…
